Mullen's Bar & Grill
3 minute read:
I don’t know about you, but for the longest time I felt like I came across a ton of people who always had their go-to restaurant when they didn’t feel like making a tough decision. It’s either that, or they have a day every week that they go to a certain restaurant whether it’s for date night, family night, or just a night out with a friend. I got sick of feeling left out and wanted to find that go-to restaurant for myself, so I did. My only criteria was that the restaurant had to have purpose behind it.
Mullen’s Bar & Grill over in Lisle was where my search landed me. If you’re looking for a genuine dining experience, look no further than Mullen’s. This restaurant definitely has purpose, and it’s shown through the very reason behind it’s original creation. When Chicago police officer Jim Mullen was wounded by gun shot in the line of duty, his family decided to start a restaurant in his name. Jim was the kind of guy who strived to give those around him a feeling of safety and ease, so that’s what Mullen’s Bar & Grill is all about. After their first location was started in Rogers Park, they also opened a second location in Pittsburg, and finally a location in Lisle.
The dining experience that Mullen’s pushes is very simple. Eating here is supposed to feel no different than eating a good meal at home with some friends. Their demographic is anyone who wants to feel like a part of the family, and as far as I’m concerned, that’s just about everybody. The issue most restaurants have with the “small town, family feel” is that it’s simply just not interesting enough by itself. Mullen’s recognized that and decided to put a little pizazz to their restaurant by offering their guests live bands, opens mic nights, trivia nights, and DJ nights. They’re not only attracting families, but people who want to feel a part of the family, and they’re doing a spectacular job at it.
For this blog, I sat down with my new family friend Tara who calls Mullen’s her second home, and I asked her what her favorite dish was followed by the customer favorite. Tara’s answer needed no second guess, quickly bringing me the Corn Nuggets appetizer to try, followed by her favorite Chicken Kabob Dinner. I must say, I was a little hesitant with the corn nuggets because they didn’t sound very appetizing to me, but my opinion quickly changed as soon as I took a bite. As far as the crowd favorite, she said the Fish N’ Chips usually takes the win. I have yet to try the Fish N’ Chips, but I can assure you it’s on the list for my next visit.
When it comes to setting Mullen’s apart from other restaurants, it’s actually nice knowing they aren’t looking to do anything dramatic to accomplish that. Their vision has always remained the same. They look to add to the Mullen’s family, and they do so by offering consistently good food and drinks for all ages, by maintaining a warm family oriented environment, and by treating everyone the same.
If it’s your first visit, you won’t walk further than two steps past the door before being greeted by their list of current daily specials. If we’re talking about what’s to come beyond your first visit, well that’s pretty easy. Just like everyone else, you’ll be back whether it’s for their good menu, the family oriented service, or because you want to hangout with a new friend that you met at Mullen’s. Don’t overthink it, just give Mullen’s a try and see for yourself how easy it is to fall in love with this restaurant...Jim would be more than happy to have you.
